As born again Christians we do realize that the reason we have not yet been caught up into Heaven is simply because the Lord expects us to be His ambassadors here on Earth. To spread the gospel and Jesus and be His witnesses. Looking at the definition of “Witness” got me thinking.

The word “Witness” can be defined as;

  • Under law, a person who testifies under oath in a court of law, or
  • Still under Law, a person who attests to the genuineness of a document or signature by adding their own signature , or
  • Someone who sees an event and reports what happened, or
  • Spectator: a close observer; someone who looks at something (such as an exhibition of some kind), or
  • Testimony by word or deed to your religious faith

Either way, whichever definition you choose to go by there is a clear distinct purpose for us when we are called to live our lives as born again Christians. Take for instance, let’s take a look at each of the points above.

Testifying Under Oath As If In A Court Of Law

This should be rather straight forward and obvious to any born again Christian. It is expected of us to be totally honest and our words are expected to be true. In our everyday lives, true Christians are constantly living under an oath.

But before all things, my brothers, do not swear; neither by the heaven nor by the earth, nor any other oath. But let your yes be yes, and your no, no, lest you fall into condemnation. (James 5:12)

The christian living way requires us to use words that are honest and true. So basically you can see that for our credibility as born again Christians, honesty and truth is required of us in all our speech and action.

If we are therefore known to be that credible in our words. We then qualify to be credible witnesses of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Attesting To The Genuineness Of A Document Or Signature

The other role of a witness is to be a person who attests to the genuineness of document or signature. True Christians find pride and joy in the Word of God. The living Bible is the document by which our lives as Christians is governed. It is the document by which we Christians are required to not only follow but also attest to its genuineness.

We believe in the Bible so much because the Bible bears the signature of the Lord and is therefore a Word that we can stand on as it is also a Word that testifies to He who is the foundation of the the Christian faith; Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God.
