Ten Commandments

The thing about the Holy Bible is that no one can deny knowing a couple of verses right out the top of their head. Okay, maybe I might give too much credit to that fact but many people may not know certain passages off head but at least they will have a slight idea of what the Bible has to say. I say this as one who spent quality time in local bars and pubs sipping on beer and roast meat (Nyama Choma) about a decade ago with Bible especially Ten Commandments being a huge topic.

The only problem with this scenario is that we really did know all the ten commandments, the problem being that we never really took them seriously.

What Are The Ten Commandments?

The ten commandments is the law that God handed down to Moses at Mount Sinai which is in Arabia to be obeyed by initially the people of Israel and eventually the rest of the world. In other terms, the ten commandments are For those who seriously do not know what the ten commandments look like or say, I have taken the liberty to list them down here:

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
  3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s

So clearly from the text above one can see that these are not merely suggestions they were commandments given from God to nature harmony in our society, to create an atmosphere were we can all live in sanity. It was Jesus who made it simpler for us to understand these commandments as something that is achievable and not some unattainable goal. It is all about our attitude towards these commandments. Jesus explained the ten commandments as follows:

…and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” This is the first commandment. And the second is like this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:30-31)
