The reality of life is this. There is not one man; or woman for that matter who is perfect. That does not go to say that we should not strive for perfection. Quite the contrary. That is really why we should strive for perfection. The key word here is “Strive”. If we were perfect then we would not really have to strive because it would be second nature to attain perfection.
Seeing that it is reasonable to strive for perfection even though we rarely attain it; what could be the stumbling block towards us achieving that perfection? Could it possibly be the wrong decisions we make along the way? Could it be mistakes that divert us from the course we have set?
There are probably dozens of reasons I could come up with but I want to influence your thoughts in a slightly different way.
Life in Egypt
We all probably know about Moses. Remember him? The Prince of Egypt? His story starts out when he is born in the Bible’s book of Exodus chapter Two and the first verse. Actually to appreciate Moses’ story, we need to go back about half a century before this situation.
It so happened there was a famine in the Land and Jacob and his descendants and household were forced or rather invited to move to and ride out the famine in Egypt by Joseph, one of his sons who was now the Prime Minister in the land of Egypt.
It so happened that the descendants stayed quite a while in the land of Egypt, over 400 years and generations came and went for both the immigrants and the natives. The story goes on to tell us how the immigrants multiplied and become numerous in the land and the Egyptians grew weary of them
So there arose a Pharaoh who didn’t know who Joseph was and he took out his issues on the children of Israel. He made them slaves and brutally tormented the children of Israel until they cried out to God.
The Moses Syndrome
So this brings us back to Moses. He was born of an Israelite woman and raised in Pharaohs palace and grew up as a son of the princess learning the ways and the life of Egyptian Royalty. Seeing how Moses was brought up, he was a man poised to succeed in every respect. He had been set up to be royalty in the land of Egypt. Pharaohs were seen as gods so this was a great role Moses was being prepared for.
Unfortunately Moses had a little thing going on within him. There was a battle within his spirit as his destiny was not what it seemed it would be. God had other plans for him. No longer able to contain his hidden destiny, Moses came to a place where chance and time crossed paths.
According to Exodus 2:11 – 12, one day Moses took a walk and he saw the oppression of his people as dished out by the Egyptians. Not able to contain his anger, Moses made a grave error by killing an Egyptian and circumstances forced him to flee into the desert lest he be sought, found and killed by the Pharaoh’s men.
By this time Moses was about 40 years old. The unthinkable had happened. All that Moses worked for all his life had all gone down the drain at the blink of an eye. All the training, all the grooming and all the education he had received all his life seemed to be blowing away with the wind.
It doesn’t end there. All the investment and hopes the children of Israel placed on Moses knowing that he was supposed to be their deliverer seemed to have been a total waste of time and an entire lifelong investment that left many of them with nothing to retire on.
Moses has made an unthinkable error of judgment call. He went into the desert a failure probably hoping to die never to be remembered and full of shame and defeat.
